MY ROLE AT AFC LEGAL. As the Founder and Managing Director of AFC Legal Limited my role is to lead the company and direct it towards achieving the primary goals I had in mind when I decided to set up the business in 2014.
ABOUT MYSELF. My professional background is quite varied and (some would say) interesting. It includes experience in the British Military, Financial Services and Law. The training and skills I secured in my military career have certainly shaped my desire to achieve and to be successful at any venture I undertake. I can relate my work ethic, determination to succeed, and attitude towards ‘getting the job done' directly to that experience.
In 1982, at the end of the Falklands War, I decided to leave the military and return to civilian life after more than 12 years’ service . The idea of running my own business was always at the back of my mind and embarking on a Business Studies course seemed the natural first step in starting down that road - it sparked my interest in law. I later went on to work in financial services and gained experience with blue-chip companies in the City of London and elsewhere in the UK. I gained a broad knowledge of how businesses functioned and the understanding that in order to be successful, my business must be constantly moving forward with fresh ideas and innovative ways of achieving its primary goals.
HOW I CAME TO RUN AFC LEGAL. In the aftermath of Maxwell and others, the financial services industry became increasingly regulated with a myriad of legal rules, regulations and procedures governing the environment. I found the application of all these rules, laws and procedures fascinating. I was fortunate that the opportunity arose which allowed me to take time out to study law full-time and after six years of academic study and vocational training I was pronounced a Barrister at the Bar of England and Wales (non-practicing) and an Attorney-at-Law at the Bar of Jamaica where I went on to develop and run a General Civil and Criminal Litigation Practice for more than 10 years.
Legal Practice is highly regulated (and rightly so) even though most individuals with care and determination could undertake some of the work lawyers do, for themselves - particularly in those areas of legal practise not exclusively reserved to Barristers and Solicitors. Wills, Probate assistance, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Estate administration and other non-reserved activities seemed the ideal core services in which I could include lay family members and others with a view to growing a business and passing on some of the skills and experience I had acquired in my various careers.
In 2014 I set up AFC Legal Limited and kept the company ‘ticking over’ for some years whilst being involved in my practice in Jamaica.
In 2020 I planned to focus on expanding the company. Alas COVID-19 brought a range of challenges to the fore. However despite those challenges we are still determined to expand the business by setting in place a plan and structure for its future growth and development.
WHAT DOES MY JOB AT AFC LEGAL INVOLVE? One of the joys of running a small business is being forced to fully immerse oneself in all areas of running the business, so that my job entails doing everything necessary to keep the business operational on a day-to-day basis whilst planning for its future growth and development.
